LS C&S has revealed on July 6 that the company will proceed with the domestic development of a liquid-cooled (LC) ultra-fast charging cable and begin its commercialization.

Ultra-fast chargers with ratings above 400 kW, which will be supplied in earnest in the future following the standardization of domestic electric car technology, will use the LC method instead of the AC (air-cooled) method found in the traditional fast chargers. Ultra-fast chargers will also offer more than double the charging speed of the fast chargers.

Charging cables generate great amounts of heat due to fast charging at high-voltage. The LC method suppresses the temperature increase in conductors by circulating coolant within the cable. This allows even more current to be sent through the cable, even with a smaller conductor size than AC cables, and the reduced cable thickness and weight allows even the elderly to handle them with ease.

In addition, LS C&S has reduced the risk of malfunction caused by coolant leak by improving the existing cooling method found in overseas products. 

Until now, European companies have dominated the LC charging cable market through patents and manufacturers have had to rely on imports. The company expects to secure a new patent through this domestic development project, and improve the performance and quality competitiveness of its charging cables.

A LS C&S official stated, “We have finished registering the patent for the cooling method in the US and Japan, and the patent is currently pending in Korea,” and added, “We are also working on commercializing the product with major domestic and overseas charger manufacturers.”

LS C&S is also expanding its electric car parts business by supplying electric car motor coils, high-voltage harnesses, aluminum cables, charging guns, and other products to domestic and overseas automobile and battery manufacturers, and is participating in national projects, such as the ‘Development of a Mobile Ultra-fast Charger for Construction Machinery.’
