LS Marine Solution (CEO Kim Byung-ok) announced on October 28 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SK Broadband (CEO Kim Sung-soo, hereafter SKB) on the emergency repair of international subsea telecommunications cables.

With this MOU, LS Marine Solution plans to broaden its partnerships with telecom operators and strengthen its subsea cable maintenance business.

The MOU aims to ensure the reliable operation of the Southeast Asia–Japan Cable 2 (SJC2) international subsea telecommunications network that connects South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and four other countries. The network spans approximately 10,500 km, and LS Marine Solution laid and buried cables for it in 2022.

The two companies will establish an emergency repair framework for responding quickly to faults in the shallow waters off Busan, where vessel traffic is heavy and access for large cable ships is difficult.

LS Marine Solution has been involved in subsea telecommunications cable installation and maintenance for approximately 30 years. With its specialized vessels and installation expertise, it will carry out offshore repairs, including cable recovery, jointing and burial. SKB will handle network monitoring and control, fault location analysis and the provision of repair materials.
With this MOU, LS Marine Solution expects to make more use of the Segero, its dedicated subsea telecommunications cable vessel. The Segero is currently deployed for approximately six months each year on maintenance work in the Asia-Pacific Yokohama Zone. This MOU will serve as an opportunity to improve the vessel’s operating efficiency by deploying it during the rest of the year as well.

LS Marine Solution has been expanding its global subsea telecommunications infrastructure business. With LS Cable & System, it recently secured a contract for the JAKO subsea telecommunications network between South Korea and Japan, which involves Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and other companies.

“In the case of a subsea telecommunications network fault, prompt repair is essential to ensure the reliability of telecommunications services,” said a spokesperson for LS Marine Solution. “We are one of the leading subsea cable companies in Asia, and we will continue to secure business opportunities in the subsea telecommunications infrastructure market.”
