■ Investing in development and production facilities for large-cross-section conductor cables
■ Revamp of KEPCO's ordering system opens up new market
■ Responding to power grid demand from AI data centers, semiconductor manufacturers, and offshore wind power
Gaon Cable (CEO Jeong Hyun) announced on the 8th that it is ramping up its expansion into the power transmission market by investing in production facilities and strengthening its product line of extra-high-voltage cables.
In addition to 154 kV 1,000 sqmm extra-high-voltage cables, the company plans to produce 2,500 sqmm large-cross-section conductor cables to meet the specifications of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). Designed for large-capacity power transmission, the new cables will be supplied starting next year.
With this investment, Gaon Cable is preemptively responding to the surging demand for extra-high-voltage transmission grids driven by the expansion of AI data centers, semiconductor production facilities, and offshore wind power.
KEPCO recently revamped its purchasing system and will now place separate orders for extra-high-voltage cables and connection materials. Previously there were only three eligible suppliers, including LS Cable & System, but now specialized cable companies such as Gaon Cable can participate in bidding.
Gaon Cable initially entered the extra-high-voltage cable market about 10 years ago, and has strengthened its business foundation by supplying 66 kV and 154 kV extra-high-voltage cables for projects such as the Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 connection grid and a power grid construction project for a large-scale data center in Gyeonggi-do.
With the government recently promoting the construction of AI data centers and semiconductor clusters, there is a growing need to expand power infrastructure. Industry analysts project an additional power demand of approximately 28 GW, which will in turn fuel demand for extra-high-voltage cables.
"Our technological prowess in the power distribution cable sector is well-established, and we now plan to strengthen our competitiveness in the extra-high-voltage transmission market as well," said Jeong Hyun, chief executive officer of Gaon Cable. "We’re also exploring opportunities to enter the North American extra-high-voltage cable market through LSCUS, our US subsidiary."
