LS Cable & System (LS C&S) is partnering with global energy companies to develop next-generation technology for subsea crude oil transport.
LS C&S announced today that it is co-developing the 'FlowHeat' electric heating submarine pipeline technology with Norway's DeepOcean, Equinor, and Aker BP, and France's TotalEnergies.
This innovative technology, which is attracting attention as a new standard for deep-sea oil field development, involves inserting a heating cable (heating wire) into the pipeline, rather than using a conventional external heating wire, to prevent crude oil from solidifying in the cold, deep-sea environment.
LS C&S plans to develop the heating cable, a core component of this system, and become the sole manufacturer and supplier starting from 2028. The cable is designed to withstand extreme marine conditions, including ultra-low temperatures and high water pressure, and its performance and reliability will be verified through field trials.
The cable insertion method simplifies installation and improves efficiency, leading to approximately a 35% reduction in cost, a 30% reduction in carbon emissions, and a shorter construction period. It can be installed at depths up to 3,000 meters and over distances of up to 30 kilometers, utilizing a small remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for cable deployment.
DeepOcean, a marine engineering company, will oversee the project, with Equinor, Aker BP, and TotalEnergies, who will participate as demonstration partners to verify the technology at deep-sea oil field sites, including the North Sea.
“This collaboration is an international recognition of LS C&S’s long-distance cable technology and global supply chain capabilities,” a company representative stated. “It will be a turning point for us to expand our business, which has been focused on power and communications, into the oil and gas sector.”
LS C&S is leveraging its submarine cable technology to expand its business into core infrastructure fields, from signal cables for defense applications in cooperation with LS Marine Solution, to oil and gas.
