Gaon Cable (CEO Jeong Hyun) is expanding its North American power infrastructure business by entering the US transmission network market.

The company announced on the 29th that LSCUS, its US production subsidiary, is promoting investment in overhead line production facilities. Gaon Cable has previously focused on power distribution, and this investment will mark an expansion into the transmission sector.

Recently, the Korean government has prioritized a US combined cycle gas power plant project as its No. 1 investment in the US. Constructing a gas power plant requires low-voltage (LV) cables inside the plant, medium-voltage (MV) cables to connect the plant to substations, and a transmission network to send power to demand sources.

LSCUS is currently expanding its MV and LV cable production lines, with phase 1 slated for completion in October this year and phase 2 in the first half of next year. With the addition of overhead line production facilities, the company will broaden its local supply system to encompass the transmission network sector.

In the US, overhead lines and transmission towers are common due to the long distances between power plants and demand sources. According to the Edison Electric Institute, US power companies plan to invest approximately USD 178 billion in transmission networks between 2025 and 2028. This investment is being driven by the expansion of AI data centers (AIDCs) and high-tech manufacturing, along with the proliferation of new power sources.

Gaon Cable is already supplying LV cables to power plants for AIDC grids being built by US big tech companies in Texas. Producing overhead lines will allow the company to expand its business scope from internal power grids to transmission networks, and raises the possibility of future synergy with LS GreenLink's extra-high-voltage submarine and underground cable businesses.

The company is also considering entering the nuclear power cable market as investments in US nuclear power grow, and plans to expand related businesses in phases according to project schedules and market conditions.

"With LSCUS at the center, we will expand our local supply system from transmission to distribution to more aggressively target the US power infrastructure market," said Jeong Hyun, CEO of Gaon Cable.
